Google recently started allowing users the option to add a background image to the classic Google homepage. Some have accused Google of “borrowing” the idea from Bing, and I can’t help but agree there is a striking similarity.
Last week Google announced that they would be adding the option as part of homepage revamp, but for some reason Google decided to force users signed into a Google account to use background images for brief period of time beginning Wednesday night, a move that turned out to be tremendously unpopular among the Google users.
After only 14 hours “remove google background” had become the seventh most popular search phrase. Google quickly pulled the plug on the forced background image experiment and the option had completely disappeared from the homepage as of midday Thursday.
This morning the option resurfaced as a link in the bottom left corner of the homepage; however, this time Google has wisely given users the option to enable the background image if they so chose.
While this may be a small victory for Microsoft’s Bing it is far from monumental. Google is still the biggest bully on the block with almost 85 percent of the search market, compared Bing’s 3.24 percent.
